DESE Civics Pathways

Workshop 1: Introduction to the Student-led Civics Project

This workshop gives an overview of the purposes, key characteristics, and stages of the Massachusetts student-led civics project. You’ll explore case studies from Massachusetts classrooms and identify your own next steps for preparing to facilitate the civics project with your students.

Self-paced Online Learning: Planning the Student-led Civics Project: A Stage-by-Stage Guide

This three-session self-paced learning experience takes you on a deep dive into the student-led civics project, stage by stage. The course assignments help you create a plan for implementing the civics project and generate resources you can use immediately in your classroom. You’ll receive feedback on your work from teachers experienced with facilitating the civics project. Join the course on your own or work together with colleagues who have also registered.

  • Session One: Examining Self & Community (Stage 1) and Reflecting & Showcasing (Stage 6)
  • Session Two: Identifying an Issue (Stage 2) and Research & Investigation (Stage 3)
  • Session Three: Developing an Action Plan (Stage 4) and Taking Action (Stage 5)

5 self-paced hours (7.5 PDPs) per session plus a final reflection for a total of 16 hours (24 PDPs) for the full course.

Workshop 2: Assessing the Student-led Civics Project: An Introduction to Process-Focused Assessment

A key characteristic of a Massachusetts student-led civics project is that it is process-focused. But what does it mean to assess for process and what are effective strategies for doing so? In this workshop, you’ll try out procedures and tools that teachers have used to provide supportive, process-focused assessment to learners engaged in the student-led civics project.
