Agency by Design

Explore the promises, practices, and pedagogies of maker-centered learning.

The Agency by Design research initiative was established in 2012 to explore the promises, practices, and pedagogies of maker-centered learning. The key concepts that emerged from this project include maker empowerment—individual and collective agency seen through the lens of making—and sensitivity to design—understanding the designed dimensions of the world and seeing the designed world as malleable. Additionally, systems thinking is a focal point of the project. The three integrated maker capacities of looking closely, exploring complexity, and finding opportunity are central to the project's framework for maker-centered learning. These capacities are further supported by multiple making moves. An extensive suite of over three dozen tools and resources for educators and administrators leverages the theory behind the project's key concepts and maker capacities.
