Art to Systems and Back Thinking Routine and Facilitator Tips

2021
A thinking arc that uses art to help learners examine the civic systems that shape communities and everyday life.
SUMMARY

Art to Systems and Back is a thinking arc developed by Project Zero that uses works of art as entry points for exploring civically related systems that shape how people live and interact in communities. Through a structured sequence of close looking, system identification, and reflection, learners move from observing an artwork to examining the rules, beliefs, customs, and relationships that influence civic life, and then return to the artwork with new insights. The routine encourages learners to identify both visible and invisible parts of systems and to consider personal connections to them. Designed for flexible use across classrooms, museums, and professional learning settings, the arc supports deep thinking about complexity, interdependence, and civic understanding.
