Educating for Civic Agency

Registration is open until March 21 and is first come, first served.

The workshop is relevant to educators in all settings (e.g. classroom teachers, librarians, arts educators) who work with youth between the ages of 3 and 18.

$75 for both days (March 26 & May 7). $50 for March 26 only.

With increasing polarization and incivility in civic life, what role should schools play in preparing children to be active participants in their communities? How can building connections between the classroom and community enhance our ability to live together in diverse societies and learn from and with each other? Grounded in the belief that children are not just future citizens, but are citizens of the here and now, this presentation explores innovative ways in which children and adolescents are developing civic agency through voice, dialogue, and listening.

• In the first workshop, after learning from several case studies of educators and youth (prek through high school) engaging in this critical work, participants will design a classroom project to support civic agency among students in their settings.

• The second workshop includes a process for participants to share what they learned, consider feedback, and gain insights and inspiration from fellow educators designing civic projects in other settings and across a diverse set of civic issues.
